I've been keeping an eye out for The Book of Barely Imagined Beings and debating whether to get it. (I don't have space and really ought to curb my book and art-material buying habits!) A flick through the endpapers and chapter headings makes it sound like a good read, and it's a good, chunky book! A Bestiary for the 21st Century, the first chapter is A for Axolotl.

Has anyone read it? Is it interesting? A very brief skim made it look like it covers their regenerative properties in detail, and I think it's where I read the Aztecs used to pay each other in Axolotls...

Edit: Actually, part of that first chapter is available in the ebook preview of Amazon. (And a later chapter is on Tardigrades! This book is going on my wishlist for definite.)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
