Axolotl gill question

Hey guys, I've recently adopted two juvenile axies, a leucistic and a wildtype, but my question has to do with the wildtype's gills. In almost every picture I've seen of an axolotl they have 3 gill stalks, but my wildtype only has 2 on each side and the ones at the very bottom look withered. He came like this. Is something wrong or is he just different? Thanks for the help!:D

They probably were nipped off. Give it some time it will grow back :)

Here's a picture of his gills. It's very obvious on his right gill. As long as I've had him he has been in his own tub. Just an F.Y.I. he acts and eats normally.

Beautiful colours! He almost looks like a copper red in that picture! :)

Toothless only has two gills on one side as I suspect they were nipped off by fish in the fish shop, so I think they grew back with one bit missing. Her gills were also really stubby. Chances are the poor guy was nibbled at a bit, but like Beks says, clean, clear water, good food, and some care = stubby gills sorted :)
Good luck with your new babies!
