Hi!

I am planning to get my first pair of axolotls within the next 3-4 weeks. Currently, my tank is cycling with a snail, six zebra danios, and a live plant. Anyways, what would you say would be the IDEAL axolotl setup in a 10 gallon tank? I plan to use a sand substrate (I am currently using gravel, but I have read the horror stories of gravel with axolotls,) and I plan to get another plant or two.

Anyways, what would YOU suggest as the best 10 gallon tank setup?! Thanks! :D

I would suggest not bothering with a 10gal for axolotls. If you're going to have a pair, get a 20long or bigger.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
