Anyone else have larvae with obvious defects that seem to be growing well along with all their normal siblings? One of my babies has what looks like a very large cyst making up over 80% of his head. I'll try to get a good picture to show you. He eats just fine and swims almost as well as the others, but I worry about how long he'll live.

I also have an egg thats developing at a steady rate, but its developing as a disc of tissue instead of a real larvae.

I was going to say 'retard' in another thread, but thought 'brain damaged' was more PC.
I even stopped myself using  !

Now I'm all confuzled!

;)

So yes, I have a little 'lotl with a defect, but I'm not too sure if he'll make it or not, never mind thriving. :(

Please be judicious with words that others may find offensive. However, thank you for using it in a biologically correct manner!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
