So i've been feeding my axi mostly hikari sinking pellets and frozen bloodworms:

Can anyone give me a guesstimate for how much I should be feeding Zazu daily? He's about 6-7 inches now and I've had him for a few months. I've heard that axolotls bellies should be about the width of their head... is this true? Does this mean I'm underfeeding him? I feel like he could eat forever but I dont want to overfeed!

Hey :) The advice generally given to make sure they're well fed is to ensure their tummies are the same size as their heads. I don't feed pellets but the advice for these seems to be feed every other day for one the size of yours. One member suggested dropping in a small handful and scooping up what your axxie doesn't eat. This seems to be a good way of going about it. One member said his 'teenage axolotls' eat as many as 8 every other day, his older one can eat between 2-4. It will also depend how cool or warm they are. If they're warm, they'll eat more as their metabolism goes up.

There's more info here: http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...ion/44695-how-many-pellets-should-i-feed.html

Hope this helps!

Thanks!!! Also, love your signature... so true. I have a freak out that Zazu is dead multiple times daily.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
