I have a male and female axolotl in a 20 gallon tank with a slate bottom. Monday-Tuesday he laid down multiple spermatophores which she picked up however I do not see any eggs yet. They both have been acting quite different and been staying very close together most of the time. I'm very concerned about my female, she has not eaten in almost 3 weeks. I have fridged her for three days over a week ago in case she was constipated. She looks and acts fine but I don't know what is going on. I'm hoping she is ok and waiting to see eggs. Is it normal for them not to eat around breeding time? The male is still eating well and I did get the water levels checked at the pet store. Temp stays around 64.' Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here is a top view pic of my male and female(on left). She is fatter than he is although she hasn't eaten in weeks. I apologize for the screen. Trying not to disturb them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
