Removed the driftwood and replaced it with a very large hide made of big rocks
Also added a rock with some java fern attached
cleaned up a ton of algae as well

Nice axie you got there.

In my eyes your tank is a bit empty.
May I ask why you don't have any sand/big stones on the floor?
Try to add some more hides and if possible plants :D

But I'm glad you got rid of the driftwood, seems very sharp to me

i agree. it looks kinda empty. you should get some more hides and such.

I like it the way it is now
too much more stuff and it will be too cluttered for me
He really seems to enjoy the new layout, and there is more room inside that hide than you think, you could fit 3 or 4 axies in there no problem :p lol

I like to keep it bare bottom, easier for cleanup
it will look better when the algae grows in on the bottom again
I just have to keep up with cleaning it off the sides
The java fern will help with that eventually

Those also get really big, here is a pic of the plant that those small ferns came from:

thats in a 55 gallon too!

I will add at least a couple more hides when I get a female again

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
