Im getting a axolotl soon and im about to start cycling my tank it is 14 g and im getting 1 axolotl and im getting a water test kit and i was just wondering how i can keep my PH amonia nitrite and nitrate down.
i'm using a filter from my fish tank and then putting it back in the fish tank and putting my new filter in and possibly some water as well
I'm getting my axolotl in 1 month but ive already got my tank.
and with my water tester should i try to keep amonia ph nitrate and nitrite all down to 0
i also am getting real plants and im using driftwood, and the filter i am using is a sponge filter.
if you can help it would be great :D

Water changes. If your ammonia is 0, your tank will never cycle. And if you're adding filter media from an old tank, that's basically an instant cycle.

Your pH should be neutral, 7, not 0. But axolotls will tolerate a range from 6-8ish.

This is covered approximately 10,000 times on the forum. A little reading will reveal all!

Yes it would help. If you have a filter in your fish tank you could take some of the media out and put it into the new filter which will introduce the bacteria you need. If you have any gravel in your fish tank you can take that out and hang it in a stocking which also contains the bacteria.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
