I got 3 fire bellied newts recently, in the first few weeks after getting them, one of them died from limb rot.
Around the same time we noticed a small skin discoloration on another one. The discoloration has grown and we are very concerned. It is much less aggressive than the limb rot we previously found.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It's not fungus. It's a necrotizing wound. Unfortunately, firebellies are often imported in terrible condition and succumb to these types of illnesses.

Your best bet is to consult a vet and get it on a strong course of antibiotics. And try not to get your hopes up.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
