I got two of my first axolotl yesterday and when i brought ( dident know gender to young ) it i noticed a prolapse and it got weaker and weaker until it died :( while that was happening the other one was gagging and having trouble breathing then jumped and its head started bleading. i took that one back and told them about my other one and they said it might be a toxin because both got sick, my water conditions are perfect. im to scared to risk another one what should i do?

Before the axolotl i had fish in to get the levels right and they were fine.

Where did you get your axolotl from? I had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago when I brought some axies from the laverton market. There was something seriously wrong with the whole batch,

I assume you have a test kit? you might be best off re-starting your tank and pouring boiling water over the plants and hides in the tank to disinfect (just in case). Make sure when you get your next one that you go to a different pet store, preferably one that you can get a review of. Depending on your area some members should be able to point you in the right direction.

I do have a test kit. I looked back at the pet store and all there axolotl looked fine and happy but so did the one that got sick, im going to change the water and start the cycle again.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
