It is my fist day I got my axolotl. The tank is about 21 degrees (C) right now. Is that ok? I have a aquarium fan coming 6/12/13 I want the fan to keep the tank at 17 degree(C). Is that ok? I gave her a wax worm at 3:30 when she first cam home as a "Welcome to your new home" treat. At 9:15 she would not eat much of the thawed bloodworm I put in the tank(less than 1/4 of a cube). Nymphodora is 3 and 1/2 inches long from head to tail any information on how often to feed her and how much would be the amazing. I just hope I an doing things right.

Temperature: 17C is perfect, 21C is really a bit high.
Although it's tempting to feed your axie every 5 minutes they don't really eat very much - if you gave her a waxworm she might not want anything much for the rest of the day. No-one can tell you exactly how much to feed her, you need to get to know her and what she wants. Her body should be about the same width as her head and she should look pleasantly rounded - if she starts to look skinny increase her food, if she gets fat you need to cut down.

If she's new she possibly won't eat much for up to a week. 21 is a little high but it's better to be stable at 21 than fluctuating wildly between 17 and 21. If you can get it to stay at 17 though that's perfect :)

Am managing to keep my tank at at 18 degrees (C) and they are wandering around happily and eating well. Am sure you will be fine if you can keep the temp' a little lower.

Like you I'm a newbie and it's trial and error at the moment...but this forum is ace and the other members on here provide invaluable advice.

Good luck :)

I was just like you when I got Tooth. You'll have about four mini heart attacks for the first few weeks, then you'll get to know your axxie and it'll all be chilled unless something genuinely worrying happens. Don't worry, it does get easier!

Now...3 and a half inches necessitates feeding every day as the axxie is growing, but like Auntiejude said, you will know how much to feed by watching your axolotl. Mine are fed two small dendrobaena worms every day - and they are over 6". This is because they haven't shown signs of getting too chunky yet...if they did I'd cut down the food a bit. My tank is also 21 degrees Celsius, and I've really struggled to get mine down. It is better to have a stable, slightly higher temp than a fluctuating one - as Quentari has said - but if you can get it down, kudos to you! I'm looking at fans to get my temp down atm. Just know that higher temps sometimes means they get hungrier as they are more active in warmer water - but you will know how much to feed by trial and error. Rest assured that your axxie definitely isn't going to starve if s/he's fed every day :)

Basically, if your new baby grows, seems calm and shows no signs of stress, it's all good. Sounds like you've done some good research! Good luck!

Hey!!! im new to this too!! just got my first two.. (ment to be one but couldn't resist) so i have Indie Axie and Lego Axie. Indie is very active but Lego is more reserved, but feeding well. they are at the moment kept with fish but i might change this. my tank is ALSO at 21 degrees, really hard to keep it below that. i live in the french alps where it drops to -30 in winter which im a bit weary of!! i have a heater for when this happens but would some advice as to what is the best temp to keep them at...!!?? (it can hit 40 degrees here in the summer!!) hope yours is doing well!!!

Ideally between 16 and 18 degrees is best. A little higher isn't ideal but is okay so long as it's stable and the same as lower. Your axies should be fine without a heater so long as the water isn't actually freezing, I think it's anything above 5 degrees is okay.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
