Hi , so just a few questions on this subject for anyone that keeps these. I would like to add some terra cotta hides. Are the ones from craft stores safe ? What are the proper procedures before they are considered safe to put in the tank?

I use craft store terra cotta pots for my South American cichlids and they are safe. I scrubbed the **** out of those and rinsed with hot water real good.

I use the craft store ones all the time. I cut holes in them, use the bottoms, all kinds of things. I've never had a problem. Of course I wash them well first.

as long as there are no sharp bits they are great

Awesome, thanks guys :)

So they can be the laqured ones? I have spotted some nice ones but they have that shiney glaze on them.

I just read a thread on here yesterday , someone from China had posted some glazed items that she put into her tank. I think they were pots and mugs.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
