I am thinking of setting up an iwagumi tank with one axolotls in it, I know there will be a problem in that the climate requirements are different for the plants. But could anyone tell me if the axolotl would be happy to live in a fully planted aquarium and if the axolotls have a zero tolerance to CO2 and trace elements required for plant growth.

While those set ups are beautiful, they don't allow hiding places for axies. How about a smaller one for a shrimp tank instead?
If you are looking to set a planted tank, have a look into low tech or walstad style as they work very well for axies. There are loads of low light, cold water tolerant plants that do very well without the addition of co2. See the show us your tank thread for inspiration of other peoples planted tanks :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
