Just wondering if it's normal for a lotl not to want to hide/use a hide? There's just so much emphasis on the necessity of hides that I just want to be sure that it's not a sign of something that he won't hide. His tank is heavily planted (well, not "planted" since they're floating plants) he does get all up in the plants, and he has a place to hide, but is that normal? He spends about 90% of his time out in the open right at the glass. Thank you!

In his mind he's probably "hiding" under the plants. They are a form of hide because he'll be feeling protected from above which means he's happier to venture out & about more.

I use a lot of plants planted & floating & mine are often up in the plants chilling out.

It's still important to provide hides on the ground because it gives them somewhere to just chill at ground level.

If everything else is ok... like temperature & water parameters (always good to keep an eye on) then it can be considered normal behaviour :D.

Water parameters are normal, and he has a ground level hide, but all he ever does is sit on top of it. Thanks!

my axie does the same thing, as long as they think they are hiding i don't think it matters, also if you hand feed him he may see you and go looking for food

Sounds about normal to me! Mine hide in the plants too, or on top of the 'logs', and often sit at the front of the tank watching the telly....

Thank you all! It's good to know it's normal and that he's not coming down with something. This forum has been so helpful :) don't know what I'd do without it.

BTW i bought a new cave hide for my axie yesterday, she seems to love sitting on it, or sitting in it with only her head sticking out :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
