Well technically I picked out my pup when he was a week old but This is my first time bringing him up on here. His name is Ryli and he is an 8 week old Shih-tsu /poodle Toy fox terrier mix.

Personally as member of the purebred dog & dog breeding community I am not a fan of the cross bred dogs especially when bred by a backyard breeders. It's the backyard breeder who doesn't understand health testing & the concept of only breeding to better the breed, just because you have a male & a female does not automatically mean you should breed them.

I'm involved in dog rescue & am constantly shocked to see how many people breed their dogs because
"They just wanted the dog to have 1litter" it's a painful unnecessary ordeal to put a domestic pet through with many risks for both mama dog & pups. Often shortening the life of the mother dog. Backyard breeders add to the huge population of dogs in society without thought or concern for the 1,000's euthanized each year in pounds.

I hope your pup has come from healthy stock & I encourage you to research a proper feeding regime - avoiding any processed (can/kibble) dog foods especially the dry foods as they are the cause of kidney cancers in dogs & cats. The best way to keep canines healthy is to feed a BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) based diet & including bones daily so the teeth don't end up rotting & falling out (all the breeds in your puppies mix are prone to major dental issues :( )

Taking on a puppy is a big commitment - I hope you enjoy him & make sure to keep him healthy & happy :)

He was part of an oops litter ... I did not purchase a mixed breed dog. I am a firm supporter of rescues ... You could have asked the situation before assuming ... No offense.

I have been wanting a dog for 4 years ... Longer actually but I have been researching for 4 years, I am still working on Finding a raw non processed diet ... Its been a pain so far so if you have anything to share please do. My cat is fed canned food because I have had trouble finding a proper raw diet for her as well. But they are fed high quality even though I cant get what I truely want.

Honestly what happened with Ryli's parents ( My mom owns them both are from registered lines even though the dad is from a BYB ... Who I HATE .. But thats another story) Is they knew Toy fox was in heat and were rotating them in the crate ... However the shih - poo found a way to escape and tied with her ... It was an accident and I have begged them to spay and neuter ASAP.

My mom isn't a backyard breeder ... Just painfully ignorant. My Ry will be fixed as soon as he is physically a candidate. And I am getting him microchipped and his first shots and worming and such next week.

I only want the best for my pets and I am always willing to learn. Also I did not pay for him he was free I just got pick of the litter because of who I am and the care I give my pets.

Also I know about the potential dental issues ... I am getting him a toothbrush during his first appointment and he will be on a dental routine.

The dad is a Shih poo but both of his parents are registered and his mother is also a registered pure bred ...

Actually I am an idiot ... I am looking at raw diets here for him http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/raw-dog-food/

Oooops litters are even worse than planned backyard breeding :(

There's a morning after pill for dogs who've tied unexpectedly that could've been sought out.

The best toothbrush is a bone. Start with chicken wing tips or chicken necks whilst still with puppy teeth. Lamb rib is also good to get them chomping down. Remember teeth strength comes from using the jaw to keep the bone strong & hold the teeth in - eating just soft food does not strengthen the bones. When they chew down and into bones they actually drag the food under the gum stimulating the gum health & cleaning deep down the tooth where a toothbrush will never reach - so forget the toothbrush & find a good butcher & poultry shop that have hormone / chemical free stock.

really? Even I didn't know about that and I am the only one who has a single clue about animals in the family and yes it was irresponsible and I disagree with their keeping of unaltered animals but I will still give Ry the best.

I have never even seen butchers around here ... And I know store bought bones aren't good enough ...

I will talk to my boyfriend about the BARF diet ... i spend enough on food as is so its not like that will be an issue lol.

My cat has soft food not the dog.

Also I dont think oops litters are worse ... BYB are CHOOSING to have litters of sub par dogs just to make a quick buck ... and dont care about all the dogs in the pound ... My family is just ignorant ... Not saying what happened is ok but its hardly worse than a planned litter from a bunch of idiots

Which Raw diet do you use?

Before I was debating this ... it has a 5 on Dog food advisor but I dont want something so processed http://freshpet.com/brand/freshpet-select/

Its too bad bil-jac isnt any good since thats not so hard to get.

Well Ryli had his appointment yesterday, he was completely healthy, No sign of anything wrong at all but they gave him a dewormer and some Revo just to be safe and we microchipped him. They said he was the bravest puppy they have seen, He didnt even cry with the giant microchip needle.

My big brave male shar pei never even blinks when he gets his shots but he yelps and squeals like a baby if he gets his paws wet! if he gets rained on he's sulky for days!!

9 weeks

Baby Ryli just went in for his shots and got a clean bill of health, at 3.5 lbs I am starting to think he may outgrow his parents but he still wont be big.

Ryli's a cute pup - I hope you'll enjoy a lifetime of unconditional love and as someone involved with rescues I have to agree with the comments about the origin of this litter. Hopefully you'll continue to pressure your folks into getting their pets fixed.

As this is an area where strong opinions are not uncommon I've just got to say that I have my own view on cross breeds. My own death row rescue girl is (I think!) a wonderful blend of German shepherd and lurcher bred for hunting but I'll never know for sure. She has a good healthy mix of genes unlike many pedigrees whose inbred disabilities are fixed in the name of ridiculous breed standards that have altered over time. Having visited the Natural History Museum at Tring which has a number of mounted specimens of historic origin it's clear that today's dogs have had many features exaggerated over generations and this hasn't made their lives better - often interfering with normal functions such as breathing, cooling and locomotion. Pedigree dog breeders have really messed many of them up and to my mind at least, the more breeds get mixed and vigorous the healthier they will be.

Having read your posts Nikki, I'm sure you're talking about efforts to breed pedigree dogs without congenital issues etc. but as someone owned by a crossbreed I just felt the need to speak up. I agree with so much of what you've said and like you, wish I lived in a world where a surplus of owners cherished every dog bred.

Anyway fellow dog-lovers, I'll put away my soap box..

Ryli will be with me his entire life, I generally rescue as well and that was my plan but honestly if I hadn't gotten my little man he most likely would have ended up in a shelter when someone got tired of him. He is a perfect gentleman and I will do my best to convince my mother to spay and neuter her dogs. In the meantime I am taking care of mine, talking to the vet about his neuter taking care of hos shots and socializing him to new people as well as animals. Maybe he didn't come into this world in a way everyone likes but he is still an innocent animal and I will give him all I can.

Seems like hes a real cute puppy lol Take good car of him!

We are currently working on finding out his favorite type of toy :) Once we find one he really likes I will post pictures of him playing :) I seem to make him just wanna sleep lol, I had the same effect on my last dog at this age ( before ANYONE asks about her ... She was stolen and we never found her, that was 4 years ago :( and I still miss her)

At 10 weeks the vet says Ryli is perfectly healthy, eating well and that it sounds like everything is on track. He has already been microchipped and seems to be a perfectly happy puppy.

Ryli will be going in for his second shots next week Wish us luck!!! I will update everyone

Random question ... if you saw him would you guess he has an underbite?

Great news from the vet. Ryli is growing well, he is 5.3 lbs now and very healthy.

Sorry Ry has been keeping me busy ... I finally have time to post some pictures. yes he has a flea collar on in some photo's ... I was between paydays and his heartworm med was SUPPOSE to prevent fleas anyway

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
