I got my first axolotl Kujo about a week ago and moved him into a ten gallon tank with plenty of room. He's only about three or four inches long and is eating and acting normally. Last night I noticed he was having a difficult time keeping his tail and back feet on the ground. He kept floating up to almost an 80 degree angle. He found ways to grasp rocks and the glass wall to steady himself but every time he walked on the sand floor he would slowly begin to float up. I read somewhere that this could be caused by constipation, but being a first time (and very recently new) owner, I'm a tad concerned. I could of course be stressing over nothing but some reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

I call it 'floaty bum syndrome' and yes, it's usually followed by a poop (or a fart) and then they are back to normal.
If you have hides or rock for him to take refuge under, and he doesn't seem distressed then it will work itself out

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
