Recently I have noticed that my axolotl swims vigorously around his tank. He also gulps for air alot. His water is cold, about 60 degrees farehite, hos water is dechlorinated and he has a filter which doesn't have a strong current. Alsothe axolotl is only about 4.5 to 5 inches. Is this normal juvenile behavior, or a sickness?

Just to mention, he does eat and he eats ALOT. His tail is also always straight. His tank is also airated by his filter and he has a small water stone.

Have you had your tank water tested ? Do you have your own test kit (liquid or strip test kit)?

Usually vigorous swimming and excessive gulping can be put down to water quality.

Also don't forget to let your dechlorinated water age at least overnight as this can effect them too.

If you can give us some water readings PH, Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates someone can steer you in the right direction

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
