I've just got back from a week's holiday, and 2 of my axies are missing the tip of their tails, and I think another has been chomped on the gills! They usually only get snap happy if they are hungry (I tried to persuade them into every other day feeding, but they decided to try and chomp on each other) but what else could have made them turn on each other?

My son was feeding them every day, vacuuming the poop, checking the temp and water quality, and everything was fine when we got back other than a couple of 'hidden' poops.

Did they just get upset at the change of routine? The irregular feeding times? Did they miss me?!

I know they'll recover, and none of them seem particularly unhappy or bothered by their injuries, I'm just concerned that they've acted weird while I was away.

It could well be the change in routine. And perhaps your son was a little more 'wild' in the tank with cleaning up and startled them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
