I have a 20 long housing one axolotl ... I had divided it for Natsu and Shinju but as of this morning I can not find Shinju anywhere :( I checked every inch of the tank.

I have a 50 gallon filter on the tank and I may be getting a chiller but I am torn on whether to get another or not.

What are you saying? Did Shinju get eaten? Was she small enough? Make sure you're not overlooking hollow parts of decoration items. Also look around and under the tank, sometimes axolotls jump out. Never keep a bite-sized axolotl with a larger one.

You think she jumped out?

He was not in with her ... The tank is divided and I was sure there was no way to get past the divider It was (and is) very tightly fitted. I looked around the tank and have checked every inch of the tank his side is very plain.

I have a mesh topper on the tank though.

What I don't know is should I even get another lotl... I know freak accidents happen but still :(

I do not think its possible to have jumped out since I do have a topper on the tank.

He HAD TO have wiggled past the divider and got eaten, I have checked every inch of both sides of the tank.

Hopefully Shinju turns up!! Don't give up hope :(

It is possible to swim under the divider, my frd tried to divide her axies up too, one just swam under to the other side -.-

Maybe give it some time before considering another one..

I don't think so, I notched it so it fits flush

I am not getting another yet

After this accident I don't know if I should get another at all :(

I hope he turns up, its not like him to just disappear

take out everything from Shinju's side of the tank very carefully. I once lost a guppy in a breeder tank once and found her buried under a decoration -.-

I did ... There are only 3 things on his side.

Aww no!! Shinju was so small and cute! He/She did look very small compared to your other axolotl. Perhaps keep very little ones in a small tub or small tank next time if you do get another.

OH no!

That would be terrible..... do you have a cat or dog? If my axie did a tank jump, I do know my doggy would be all over it :( Hes loves watching the axie tank.

Hope you find the dear little one........ lets us know what you find.....

I haven't found anything but Natsu seems to have a very full belly,

If I do get another I am getting one 3+ inches so it can't slip past the divider ... I have used this method with bigger lotls before with success

I do have a cat but she only hunts bugs ... even when I had an open tank she just wanted to drink their water

I found a teeny gap at the bottom that I think he could have gotten through. If I decide to get another I will be fixing that.

Personally i dont think you should get another, your baby should of been in a separate tank, not in with an adult (divider or not) until he grew more. I believe looking at your other threads he had his own tank so why would you be so irresponsible to put him in with the bigger one. Youve already stated you didnt want him you wanted a melanoid so seems to me you may have done this on purpose! Im sure this will probably get me some harsh comments but as someone who has bred them i cant see why you have done what you have and then to only ask the question if you should get another, no remorse is coming across in this thread.

Of course I am upset and I have used this method before ... if I did not want him why would I go out of my way to get him? I am very patient so waiting for a melanoid would be no issue.

Sorry its hard to convey emotions in a thread ... I am debating whether or not to get another due to this accident. There is a reason he was moved into the bigger tank and out of his seperate tank ... I could not keep both cool and I did not want him to get hurt !!! I loved Shinju and I don't think you should be making accusations without knowing me as a person.

I was sure that I had divided it so that he could not get through even custom fitting the divider to the suction cups ... I did not see this coming at all.

But what would you like me to ask? Where to find him? I know how to look for him and I have looked over every inch of the tank.

I only want the best for my animals!!

Also if you have read my other threads you would know Natsu was not the color I wanted either ...

If I do get another it will be another grown lotl that way there is no risk ... Natsu is highly non aggressive.

They eat anything that moves! Ive got enough of them to know. Even well feds ones occasionally nip at each other. Theres ways of keeping tanks cool without a chiller, i appreciate some parts of the u.s are hotter than the uk but weve had 35degree heat where i live and ive no chiller and cope, id rather do that than risk them getting eaten.
Sorry but i read so many threads similar it just annoys me. Only you know if you should get another, why ask if you dont want someone to say no. The end of the day they can be aggressive, our placid guys all of a sudden started having a go at each other and had to be divided, ive got a small axie and would never put him in a tank with any other the other 8 biggies even with a divider as they have a way of getting across when they put their minds to it! Ive got one (moomin) that keeps getting across to (evo) god know how shes doing it, must be high jump specialist, the divider cant move yet all of a sudden she'll be over the other side. Ive big tanks too!

The big one ( Natsu ) did not get on Shinju's side .... and yeah I expected a no but not a " you intentionally fed him to the other one"

I was actually more worried about the size of the tank.

if you expected a no why ask? the risk of it happening was there. and if you are worried about your tank size then youve answered your own question.

I know my tank is technically sufficient but numbers are not everything.

Elliriyanna Even when we 'child proof' everything, anmials are unpredictable and accidents and strange misterious things happen.... I dont know if I would get another one either.
There are always goign to be negitive comments and personal attacks made on forums, unfortunately reading text its hard to know exactly how to take the comments.

Dont be to hard on yourself, at the very least, if Shinju was eaten it would have been a quicker way to go than if he/she jumped and suffercated and dried out. (I know this sounds harsh but I am not saying it to be mean)

Im sure when you started this thread you were not asking directly if you get another lotl or not, because if you love axies you will get one but more so ideas on how to prevent it happening agin if you choose so to replace.

I don't think I can replace Shinju I already knew his personality :( Such a fiesty baby

But I did learn, If I get another it will be one big enough to move in with Natsu Happily.

I love my lotls so much <3

Accidents happen, practice makes perfect, and all that good stuff. Stuff happens with axolotls, Its a trial and error process. Don't anyone tell you not to try again, EVERYONE has managed to kill stuff at some time or another before, even though most will pretend like they haven't.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
