So I'm planning on moving Toaster to a new tank soon (hubby's just picked up new tank) and I've been told that I'll need to cycle the new tank, but why? I'm transferring literally everything over from the old tank, including the filter which surely would contain all of the denitrifying bacteria from my already cycled tank.

Will your filter be big enough for the new tank?
If you are doing a quick swap you should be OK, but bacteria die pretty quickly and you do need to make it a quick change.
If you new tank is bigger it may take a while to settle in, but it won't be like starting again from scratch if you use your existing filter, ornaments, water etc. If you have a new filter you can run 2 in the same tank to colonise the new filter.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
