My little just-turning-6-month-old axolotl, Monster. He just loves to ham it up for the camera whenever I'm taking pictures. He even swims upside down sometimes, but he doesn't stay that way long enough for me to get a picture of him. He does seem to love swimming up to the surface just like this and waving at me.

I have a little question though. How long should he be at this age? Right now he's barely touching 6 inches long. I thought that might be a little small, but I'm not too familiar with size-age relationships in axolotls.

Axolotls all grow at different rates, according to conditions, feeding and genetics. 6" at 6 months sounds fine to me.
Adults can be anything from 8-17" at 12-18 months.

Okay, that's good. So far I think I've been doing everything right, so he should grow up to be a big healthy axolotl. Thanks for the info.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
