What other sort of things are in the fridge? And do you keep the container open or do you put a towel over it? Could possibly be that something in the fridge recently spoiled and ended up spreading something harmful.

I'm not sure what could have caused that, then. Unless your axolotl carried it from the tank to the fridge and only contracted it recently. Or if there's some sort of spore in the water supply.

Ever found furry chesse in a fridge? Mouldy fruit? Fungus will grow even at low temps.

It is likely that you axie had an injury and picked up some fungal spores in the wound, possibly before he went in th fridge, and the fungus just grew.

You just need to do salt baths until it is gone, and he should be fine - it doesn't look too bad.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
