Also refer to picsof newt 3 for sexing newt 5.
Also any comments on the general appearance of my newts would appreciated, do they look healthy? They're wild caught, and they seem to have recovered a great deal, looking a lot better than when I got them :)

Newts 4 and 5 are male. The others are likely female, but it's harder to tell. Yes, they look healthy.

Cool thanks! Are any of the first three definitely female? I was thinking about putting newt 4 and a female in a cooler for a few months to induce breeding :)

You don´t need to cool them, although it certainly helps. This species will readily breed without any significant triggers.

I've read that they need cooler temps and a strict light cycle to simulate winter. Because my tank is usually around 20-22c, I figured it might get them in better breeding condition if I let them live in a cooler at about 15c, in the cooler I can also control their light cycle better. It's a bit difficult in my main tank because I use the lights in my room up till 12am quite regularly. Would you suggest which two newts I should transfer?

My suggestion is to let them stay where they are. We've had our H.orientalis tank at different locations, every one with another conditions and they just kept on laying. I agree with Rodrigo that they do not need a specific trigger.

I just found my female laying her first egg of the season (or the first one i´ve seen, that is). No cooling whatsoever...in fact she always starts laying in late summer/early fall, sometimes with temperatures as high as 26ºC during the day.

Wow at 26c? So basically I just need to keep them healthy and they'll breed eventually? How long would it take a WC newt to recover enough to breed? I've had mine for about 4 months now

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
