Would this Forest Moss work well for a substrate for terrestiral salamanders?
(File Not Found)

I am currently using a 50/50 mix of plantation soil (File Not Found) and top soil. However, I find it gets in some of the salamanders eyes and sticks to them a bit.

Mine are always rather dirty after a good dig. If they have a small water dish or pool they usually wash off. I use tropical soil/coconut husk. I do like to collect my own moss from the forest near my work. I soak it overnight to get the bugs out. No nearby farms to contaminate but you gotta watch that. I find with the loose store bought moss that they tend to get it stuck in their mouths when lunging at food and I end up pulling moss out of their mouths all the time, and the stuff I had is the same as the one in the picture. Some specialist stores sell sheets of live moss too.

If the plantation soil contains peat, then don't use it, because its low in ph (although the topsoil you have mixed in may keep the ph from getting too low). I'm not sure about the moss though, because it may reanimate or it wont , and if it doesn't it could cause low ph issues. Don't worry about the substarte sticking to them (mine are always covered in soil).

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
