After hearing many stories and seeing many pics of axies on gravel, today I went to a fish shop which I recently found, and they had axolotls! My heart stopped because I was worried about what they knew about them....but I see two beautiful wild type axies in a NON HEATED, NO GRAVEL tank and my heart jumped! They were so cute and happy, they had hides and plants in the tank, although the axies were just under 5 inches so it wasn't the best they were together, but they seemed to get along, because they're the same size. I congratulated one of the guys on actually knowing how to care for them, and he seemed quite knowledgeable! It made me so happy:)

It's always nice to hear when pet shop owners/employees actually know what they're doing.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
