On the 4th of June I got a 15cm wild-type axolotl, he went straight into a 10gal long tank and he's had it to himself the whole time.

I've had axolotl before, all of them brought at around 15cm long. By the three month mark all of them had gotten massive, one of mine grew 7cm in less than two months. Even my very first axolotl, who was kept in a 5gal tank with graven and a constant light (I hadn't discovered this site and was just doing what the pet shops had told me) grew fast.

But not Houdini. He's still 15cm long.

I'm not too worried, he's in a 3ft tank by himself now and gets a daily feed of as many pellets as he will eat so he's nice and chubby, but I am curious as to why he hasn't grown much. I got him from a pet store, so I don't know his exact age. Any opinions on what's happened would be great!

Oh! almost forgot! When we got him one of his legs was just a little stump from where one of his previous tank mates had bitten it off. It's nearly fully regrown now, but could that have anything to do with it?

If an axie is regenrating a body part then generally it wont grow as fast as all its efforts are in regenerating :D

After all the trouble you've had you're worried about lack of nose-to-tail growth?!
I wouldn't worry as long as he's healthy, and if he's been putting his energy into re-growing a lost limb it's not surprising.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
