Hi, I'm Heather and I'm from South Carolina. I have kept fish for quite a few years but recently heard about axolotl when I saw a local craigslist post from someone else looking for an albino one. I got to reading and I'm now looking to convert my 75 gallon tank to an awesome axolotl setup (Its already practically empty and unheated, just one lonely fancy goldfish in it). I'd like to put around 4 axolotl and some easy care live plants. The only thing I need to figure out now is if I should change my substrate - its currently a mix of black tahitian moon sand and something like eco complete thats meant for planted tanks. I'm thinking it might be better to just redo it with play sand so that I'm certain that the grains of sand are small enough. Plus play sand is cheap and I've used it in the past and don't mind the look of it. So soon I will be looking for some axolotl for sale once I get it redecorated with their needs in mind :D

Your better off replacing it with playsand. It will help illuminate the contamination and make the tank a bit cleaner. Also try and use play sand because it is a long finer and easier on the Axolotls skin and inside (if eaten). Make sure you clean it well and cycle the tank! :)

For axies, look on the for sale part in the forum and online.

Welcome to the Axolotls!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
