Hello, im new to axalotl keeping and would like any advice i could be given. I have 1 axalotl i believe he is around 4 years old. I have a 3 foot tank. I got the axalotl of a friend of a friend who had no time for it. I have tropical fish thats why she offered it to me. I would just like any advice on caring for my new friend :). Also ive read up that they prefer to be with other axalotls rather than alone so i am planning on putting another with it. Is this a good idea. I dont think he has ever had a tank mate. Thanks in advance for any advice and info. I have read up on axalols so i kinda know the basics.
Thanks.

Its possible to read a thread and not have an answer :). I have two in a tank 36 inches by 15 by 15 inches. They went in together at six months old and were the same size. They are now busy producing eggs, third lot in 3 months.
Opinions vary about whether a tank mate is good or bad. Most of us softies think they should have one because we would be lonely on our own. Mine appear to be oblivious to each other but then there's those eggs so there is some interaction. Its important that they are similar size, apparently, as the smaller one may get eaten! Or its limbs eaten. Maybe you could observe for a while and keep an eye out for another adult or to rehome. I am pleased that mine has a tankmate, and that they have room to be alone if they want.

And the mantra is "cool clean water". So a good filter, with an established bacteria colony (stolen from the fish tank?) Low flow and subdued lighting and caves. Easy if you are experienced in keeping other aquatics.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
