Hello,
I just got my first axolotl(s)-two of them-just a few weeks ago. I think they are precious! I have a video of one of them when it first got here-the one called sally. I am sold on their cuteness.
My grandson is three and thanks they are adorable. We have a ton of freshwater fish tanks but one ten gallon with a divider that houses our two axolotl.
I have tried to read up on them and have found that this site is by far the most informative. I look forward to posting and learning here. I belong to a fish forum-actually a couple and have been fairly active in those.
I took the heater out of their tank today after realizing that at 78, I had them over warm. Room temp is 70 and they are on a table near a patio door-I think they will be cool enough there-any one have any other ideas? I am always open to learning and appreciate any input. Their names are Sully and Sally and I have no idea as to gender.
My goal is to take them for a visit to the school I work at-I am the school counselor/school psychologist there. It is a juvenile treatment center and the students are not allowed off the premise (the school is behind a wire fence) and love anything new and or different.

As you are new to keeping axolotls, have a look at these articles from our Caudata Culture section - I think you may find them helpful: Caudata Culture Axolotl Articles

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
