Question: Should I use this aquarium sand?

So I found some sand at the aquarium I go to, and was wondering whether it was safe to put into my axolotl tank. It's 3mm coral sand, and the bag says that it's washed and ready to use, and says that the sand is also smooth, which means that he shouldn't get cut up or anything by it.

Is this sand safe? And even though it says it's clean, should I still soak it in water to make sure nothing leaches out of it? Thanks in advance

Hi, sorry to say, but coral sand can wreak havoc with your PH levels and is not really ideal for Axolotls.

I have sand in my adult tank but I just used Playsand (from Bunnings) which you will need to wash thoroughly and then wash again for good measure and only costs around $10 for a huge bag.

Good luck setting up / rearranging your tank - some pics when finished please?

Thanks Jen, will grab some Playsand soon to use instead. Will also be much cheaper, as the 10kg bag of coral sand would have cost $40, glad I asked before getting it.

And yeah, Will definitely post pictures of it once i've finished rearranging it

I did the exact same thing with my first :) I bought coral sand and my PH started rocketing until another member told me what it did >.< I went out and got slate instead.

Can I also say that I love both your avatars?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
