Hello,

I grew up in the eastern US, quite a long time ago. I had Eastern newts as a child, bought from a pet store, but I also used to see them swimming wild in a pond in New Hampshire, so I have a special soft spot for them, and would like to keep a few now. I would like, of course, to keep them better, much much better, than I did as a kid.

In Cincinnati, OH, as a teen, I used to find many red-backed salamanders in the local park. I tried to keep them too but quickly gave that up and just contented myself with reading as much as I could about them.
Thanks for this forum!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
