I have 6 axies which have been on sand since I brought them home. They are almost 4inch now but were placed on sand at about 2 inch and Ive never had a problem

Depends how you are feeding them. If you're feeding them bloodworms or pellets you will need a feeding jar to prevent them eating too much sand, if you're feeding by hand they will be fine.

Soft sand should pass through an axie that size as long as they don't eat too much of it.

I have a feeding dish I make mine stand on then I hand feed just in case anything gets spit out so it lands inside the dish. Then I pick it back up with tongs!

Just a thought, what would be the minimum age for babies to be ok on sand?

Like auntiejude said, it depends on how you're feeding them. If they still need BBS, daphnia, or anything that feeds from the ground, I'd keep sand out. If you're giving them pellets or blood worms, use a jar at the very least. If you're hand feeding them earthworms, it's sand time, in my opinion.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
