You need to do a lot of research before you get an axolotl, please read through all the info here and on this forum.

It also never hurts to read the wiki article. Even that would have told you to use freshwater.

Axolotls aren't hard to care for, but it requires more knowledge than a goldfish and it's very easy to make rookie mistakes if you haven't done your research.

Ha ha, everyone is giving links, but I have to agree with them, research now, not when you have the animal. So I will give a link that give info as well, though its general info. I am actually surprised that it has not been linked already xD

Hope this helps! -Seth

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
