Hello there,

I have 4 axolotls for about 2 to 3 years now, but lately me yellow albino seems to have its front leg dislocated or something like that. He still looks as happy as the 3 other ones but it sure doesn't look normal. I think one of the tankmates is responsible for this.

How long have you noticed this happening? Does he ever use the foot normally? Does he have control of his wrist movement? Posting some more pictures might help.

If it's a recent injury and his tank mates were the cause, I would think there would be some swelling and redness. It could just be how he likes to rest his foot.

No, he never uses that leg, if he swims he always holds that leg against his chest.
If he rests his leg is always like this, and the wrist is fine, I rather think it is his shoulder that is in a weird position.

And I'm not sure how long he has this, I never really noticed it until a week or two ago.

I've taken some more pictures of his leg.
I really do think it is his shoulder that is dislocated, but don't know what to do about it :(

Can someone help me out on this one????

This may be a case for a vet. I know axolotls can heal broken bones and tissue, but I am at a loss as to what you could do.

I think this needs an expert's input. Even if the vet cannot help, you know then that you have done what you can and that nature needs to take over to heal him.

I'm certainly not advising to do it, but I have been advised myself not to be scared to "snip a bad leg off, and let it grow again" in those words.

I'm a little unsure of doing that myself, but certainly the couple of legs that have been bitten off in my experience have grown back perfectly.

Maybe someone who's sure about that (I'm certainly not) could elaborate...

I was thinking about cutting the leg off, but that seems a bit drastic to me.
And I think it is the shoulder joint, so if I would cut it to let it grow back again I would need to remove the shoulder joint as well otherwise the leg will grow back just like it is hanging there now. And I don't really want to take the risk of hurting him or cutting to deep. He still seems happy to me but his leg is still useless right now.
Really don't know what to do with it, maybe I will need to take a trip to the vet.

There are a couple of other threads on here recently with axies having funny upturned legs, maybe use the search button to find these and have a read through?
Then you can see what other people advise, but i would certainly consider a vets trip :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
