Hi i rescued 2 axolotls 1 male 1 female they were in a 2 foot tank and were feed on frozen bloodworm and prawns i have brought a bigger tank for them now and after taking advise from this site they now get fed earthworms but for the last couple of days i have found a couple of mashed up worms on the floor of the tank so i just wondered if someone could possibly tell me why and if its normal am i feeding them to much or is it because they arent used to them or are they to big or are the axolotls sick please help thankyou

Re: Regurgatating food

Yes, regurgitating food is normal is they are overfed. If they are adults they may only need feeding every 2 or 3 days. Or they could be regurgitating because they are stressed over the move and change of food. They'll get over it.

(And if you can write your posts in proper sentences with punctuation it would be a whole lot easier to help you too!)

Thank you auntiejude for your reply. I am sorry about not putting things into propper sentences I left school when i was 9 to look after my disabled mum so i didn't really have punctuation lessons

that's terrible!! no child should have to go through that :(
if you would like me to offer a few pointers on punctuation send me a pm ;)
regurgitation can be caused by a few things
temperature extremes, stress, shock, infection, or if it is a female she will often not keep food down if shes about to spawn, females who have just spawned can take up to 3 days to start eating again
also if they are overfed or havent eaten in a while they may vomit up excess food

I just went through this with both my tanks.

Just blatant overfeeding (3-5 worms each) on my part, I'd just bought a box of 1000 earthworms and gave them heaps.

I gave them 2 days off, gave them just one each today and they were fine.

Some times you have to resist the urge to let them "pig out"...tough love.

*hugs* Moms are the best.

Thanks everyone for your help I think i have been over feeding them its just the male looks a lot thinner than the female but since i have cut there worms down they haven't brought them back up so fingers crossed that has solved the problem. Thanks again x

Try smaller, more frequent meals to help put on weight.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
