Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum as suggested by the administrators. I am new to the whole amphibian lifestyle. My daughter has requested an axolotl as her next pet. She is an avid animal lover (at 15 years of age) and has the maturity and responsibility to care for it on her own. I think it best though to undergo this process with her to supervise. I would not venture into such uncharted territory without doing as much research as possible. I have been reading many threads of all sorts of subjects and am learning a lot. I think we may be ready to begin purchasing our supplies within the next week. We plan to attend a reptile show the first weekend of February and will also speak with experts there to see if we can find any reputable breeders locally. I look forward to becoming a more active member of this community in the future as my experience with axolotls grows. Feel free to share any wisdom with me, as I am always willing to learn from others.

Welcome! Sounds like you've come to the right place :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
