Hi this is probably a silly question but is it normal for an axolotl to sit on top of the weed in the tank so its nearly out of the water? One of mine did it tonight and i thought it was dead so i wet my hand and gently touched her tail and she shot off like a rocket it was as if she was asleep . Shes eating fine( earthworms) I have never seen her do this before only had her a few weeks though and its all new to me thanks for reading x

One of my axies loves to float around and stays near the surface. I always think he's got some kind of problem but everyone else seems fine. I caught him one time playing with the aerator and eating bubbles so he could float. All axolotls have different personalities :)

Thankyou for telling me that my axies havent had the best start in life with their previous owner so i just worry about them x

Sounds normal to me
Some axies like to sit near ther surface where there is more oxygen, some like to float, some like to hide, some like to stand on their heads....they are all different and unique.
Unles your axie is obviously injured or thrashing about like the devil is on it's tail it's probably fine. But there's no harm in checking :p

Just always check the water quality if your tank isn't already cycled. I'm happy to hear your axies have found a caring home! :)

Thanks everyone i feel better now x

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
