Hi Guys,

I just got my two first axolotls today. They are about two and a half years old, and i got them from the previous owners. They are in the same aquarium and the same water that they were the old place so the environment should be the same. I have had them for about six hours now but the male has been hiding the whole time and the female is not very active.

Is it possible that they are stressed from the moving and have to adjust to a new place before they come out and are more active?

Yes, it's certainly possible they can be stressed from the move. Axolotls in general aren't all that active though - they like to sit still and hide.

Adult axolotls dont do very much anyway if kept properly, they are far less active than juvies. Excessive activity in adults could actually indicate stress so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Lmao yup I agree with all of the above. But they can also be the most interesting thing that doesnt do much. Just some of the things i catch them "not doing" that makes them so funny.. I mean who would agree that their axie can keep position for a full day and only move if you give them food? If not then its just me.. But I do find they are way more active at night.. Like mine will "play" with each other, or it looks like non-sensual playing anyways. Like hide and attack or something..

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
