I have a very fat axilotl I don't know if she is carrying eggs or has fluid retention. She feels like a water balloon, still eating good and seems ok other than her size.it came upon very quickly and she seems to be getting a little bigger everyday.

Oh my! I would get this axolotl to the vets ASAP. She looks huge :(. Can you take a photo of her from the side?

What do you feed her and how much?

It is definitely bloat--- but from what i cannot tell.

A vet would be able to access her and at least give you an idea of what caused this..

Quick question though since I have seen an adult develop bloat from short toe syndrome, though most die within 3months. Is your lotls limbs fully developed? Its hard to tell from this picture.

I will safely say by looking at the limbs I can see that she is definitly retaining fluid which I have never seen it not be a bad thing(someone can correct me) but this guy needs vet help asap if it stands a chance.

Gravid axies are pear shaped - that one looks football shaped and is probably suffering from bloat/fluid retention and needs to see a vet. The other issue is that it has come on quickly - always a cause for concern.

I've answered you on your other post too. Your axi is ill, it needs a vet. It probably has bloat which needs to be treated by a vet. Sadly asking the same question over and over again will not change the fact that your axi needs to see a vet, to a degree it is not relevant what has caused this sudden and dramatic swelling be it fluid retention, bloat or as you speculate in your other post renal failure, the fact that it has now become as severe as it has means it is beyond the scope of 'amateurs' and has entered the realm of the professional. Please seek help ASAP.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
