Hi - I am looking at returning to newt keeping. I kept California newts when I was a teenager and loved them for many years. Now I am settled and have space and time I would like to keep newts again. I have room for a 4-6ft tank. It is a long time since i kept newts and wondered what would be a good friendly active species that would be readily available? i would really like to start from eggs if possible. Captive bred species essential!
thanks
Mark

Triturus karelinii, T.carnifex, T.dobrogicus, T.macedonicus, Tylototriton verrucosus, Hypselotriton cyanurus, Pleurodeles waltl, Ambystoma mexicanum.
All of those have large, fully aquatic juveniles, are extremely easy to raise and keep and are frequently available from breeders.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
