I'm building an aquaponics tank, and I've been trying to figure out what sort of soil to use for my plants. Will coir work? Or topsoil? What might be dangerous to the axolotl?

Normally soil is just going to cause problems, if not mixed up or changed regularly (which would make the tank very murky) it creates perfect breeding ground for bacteria which could harm your axolotl. Your axie may dig up plants and get the soil everywhere as it is very easy to pull up. You can get sand that are good for plants and safe for axies.

Axolotls dig plants up, have you considered free floating plants ? Elodea and hornwort are good choices, they are quite resistant to damage and if brocken regenerate new plants

yeah definitely go with free floating plants. When people created planted aquariums they add soil on the bottom layer and cap it off with something that prevents it from mucking up the water. An axolotl would just dig straight down to the soil. The other option is using small pots for the plants.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
