Hi guys,

I just got my tank ready and I'm looking forward to starting my fishless cycle. Obviously I'll need some ammonia to start with. Some use a frozen shrimp and let it rot, but I've also heard people putting in 1 drop of pure ammonia in it every 15 minutes until it reaches 4ppm and then keep it steady at that for the duration of the cycle.

I couldn't find pure ammonia (as it's gas), however I did find a bottle of ammonia in our home with a 5% solution. Would that be a good option?

As long as ammonia is the only chemical in it (no detergents or anything) and you are able to get the dosage right, then yes.
Although... there is a girl who posts on another fish forum I go on who will offer to come and pee in your tank to get the cycle started...

No detergents, I just rechecked the bottle and it says (translated):

"Ammonia with less then 5% dissolvent"

So it should be good to go right?

can you order dr. tims ammonia for fishless cycles? this is what i have i am too much of a worrier to use anything else

Where are you? In the US you can get janitorial strength Ammonia at Ace Hardware. It's a 10% ammonia with no phosphates.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
