Hi Everyone!
I am very new to keeping Axolotls but not new to keeping aquatic life. In the past had a 75 gallon where I housed 3 large Oscars and a Large I mean Large goldfish-it was over a foot ½ long and currently have 3 bettas. I will be getting my Axolotl; possibly two haven’t decided yet for sure, next Friday 3/21/14 and my tank-20 gallon long , will arrive Tuesday 3/18/14-which now has been very concerned when it comes to the tank cycling. My plan is to set the tank up that day, substrate will be very fine silica sand, my understanding is the Axolotl(s) I will be getting are juvies and should be approximately 4-6” long so the sand should be okay, I have a large piece of Mopani driftwood, which is a little over a foot long that I might add, but I’m afraid it may be too large for the tank and not give them enough room to move around and am still on the fence with adding fake or real plants.
Would it help the cycling process if I added my Bettas to the new tank until the Axolotls arrived? I have had them for over a year so I am not worried about ick but am worried about them possibly transmitting a parasite to my new babies? Or should I just wait till the Axolotls arrive let them cycle the tank while doing water testing and daily changes?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated because there would be nothing more deviating to me then to get my new babies and then have them die on me.
