I have to admit that I have very little knowledge and zero experience to this point. For those reasons, I am very happy to be able to come here and learn; and I need to start at the beginning! I'm also looking forward to meeting some great folks here.

I live in Charleston, West Virginia in the US. It is a very small and rural state with outstanding opportunities to observe and learn about the natural habitats of newts and salamanders. Unfortunately, I believe I am the only one in the state even remotely interested in these animals. I hope to use your advice to start a vivarium of my own, but I'm not in a rush! I want to know what I'm doing and do it right. Wish me luck!

Tim

Good luck,

I have only recently joined and already have learnt tons more than I expected. I bet you in a few weeks you will be surprised what you have learnt.
Have fun!

Scatter7 ...I'm glad you joined, west Virginia is a great place for salamanders and frogs.this is not really a hobby,it's so much more than that, because it's studying life, and trying to understand animals around you other than yourself.

I'm from West Virginia though I live in the South currently to attend vet school. I'm a huge fan of salamanders, so you are not alone in your interest! I have been keeping them for about five years now though I still lack a lot of experience. There actually is a lot of hellbender-related conservation going on in the state.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
