Hey everyone! I've been a long time browser and read probably over 500 newt and salamander threads. I currently have two long toed salamanders and one ensatina, or at least I'm pretty sure it's an ensatina. I acquired him a couple months ago, but the long toed's I've had since summer of 2011. I'm currently tweaking my design for a nearly self-sustaining vivarium, been planning for a while now.

I'm north of Seattle, around the Snohomish area of Washington. I love building and designing all sorts of things around the house, so it's been a mini-dream of mine to create this perfect vivarium for my guys.

I'm excited to get more active on here and join in, I have acquired so much knowledge from this forum alone, it's amazing and I thank everyone who participates!

Thanks!

Chad

Hello and welcome fellow Washingtonian ;)

A. macrodactylum are very cool species, but I rarely find them. You said that you weren't sure if it was an ensatina? The only thing I can think of that look similar is a juvenile A. gracile, which look like the one that you posted asking about but are smaller ( hence juvenile ).

And if I would love to know how you did your self sustaining tank? Sounds awesome!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
