Okay, so about a week ago my little guy's water was nice and clear and clean, as it has been for several months.

I decided to get him something new for his tank so I went to the pet store and bought a fake log. I cleaned it and soaked it and then put it in his tank. Imagine my surprise when I went to move it a little two days later and it turned brittle and broke in my hand. Concerned, I took it out, and have been replacing some of the water every day.

His water seems to be faintly cloudy now. Not a whole lot, but just a little bit, near the bottom (it's still clear, but it just seems, thicker, I guess.)

I decided to take a good look and watch him for a while and a few minutes ago I noticed for the first time two different little bugs along the glass. They're tiny white specks, but seem to have small antennae. I saw one flutter out and up to the top of the water before coming back down again. There are also a lot of white speck-like particles just floating around.

I'm very panicked and worried for my little guy. What should I do? I'd take pictures if I could but that's not possible right now. Please help!

What filter do you have on your tank? Do you have one? Not necessary but if it removes particles from the water it might be an idea to rinse it out so it can remove more and maybe push it into an area where it'd be more effective.

Yes, I have a filter. I'm not sure what kind it is but it's always been useful, I made sure to clean it today. I also did another water change.

The little white things are probably planaria and are completely harmless. They thrive when there is food for them in the tank - which is currently provided by your rotted wood.

If you have gotten most of the wood out thats a good start, try a couple of big water changes, and just scoop the planaria out as you see them. It will take some time, but it will clear in time.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
