Greetings from Oakland!

A few weeks ago I ended up getting an Eastern newt as part of a trade.

I have no experience with newts but I have kept ADFs and lots of other freshwater fish and have kept a relatively heavily planted community tank for quite some time.

Herman was pretty skinny when I got him (not as skinny as some photos I've seen out there) but so far seems healthy and has been eating earthworms from a neighbor's yard that I cut into small pieces (he won't eat red wigglers). Previously he was fed mainly blackworms which he does eat, but thanks to this forum I decided to give earthworms a try to fatten him up. He's already fatter and healthier looking than when I got him!

So far so good. I'm planning on getting a handful of cherry shrimp (as tank mates/snacks) and setting up a more permanent land area (he has a pfd now that he does use sometimes).

Thanks to everyone for such a wealth of information! I hope to contribute back when I can.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
