My daughter and I went out yesterday to harvest some earth worms and I picked up close to 50 pill bugs. I read somewhere on the internet that you can release these pill bugs into the terrestrial tank. I hear they can keep a tank clean from rotting foods and other bacteria.

I have not put them into the tank yet as I wanted to get your opinions.

One last question as well.

The family will be taking a 2 week vacation soon. I mist the tank down a few times a day. Sometimes the soil just gets to dry, Is it possible to setup a mister every few hours? (like the grocery store produce misters) Of course the water will be conditioned. And if I was to throw in some night crawlers into the tank. Will the salamander dig for them?

Thanks again

Adding woodlice to the tank would be great, although it would be best not to add so many your salamander is overrun (essentially it just depends on the size of your terrarium for how many). A population of these in your tank would also be an ideal food source for the salamander when you're on vacation. You could add earthworms, but I wouldn't guarantee that it would dig to seek them out.

A well-fed adult salamander should be able to handle 2 weeks without a problem. Just try to keep it at the coolest temperature possible, and feed it plenty before you leave.

If temperature is not an issue, decreasing humidity by covering part of the lid is an easy way to prevent drying out of the enclosure. A water dish could also be left in the tank to provide an extra source of moisture.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
