My Axolotl are very happy tonight. My husband helped me install a chiller today. I have it set at 65 degrees, is this OK? It was funny Salt my white Axolotl was watching every move my husband made while installing it, she was like what are you doing? Can i help? Pepper my wild type she was like what ever i do not care what you are doing. They are so cute. They have been with me for a year now, I have had the chiller for about 6 months, just did not know how to install it. Now it is done and two happy Axolotl.

Truthfully I couldn't imagine not having a chiller especially living here in Florida where the summers are brutal. I keep mine set at 63 degrees also.

Looks like i will change the temp to 63, i just did not want to have it to cold. Summers here in Washington State on the east side gets pretty warm for about three months. I do have air conditioning in the house but it still did not keep them cool enough. Thank you all for the reply's.

Tempted to say me too, but in the UK.

When we purchased our small creature we decided to fit twin overhead fans to het tank which are very precisely temperature controlled units, but of course their performance is greatly influenced by the rapidly varying temperatures in the UK allied to fluctuating and our archaic domestic heating systems. Fans, no matter how well controlled will only reduce tank temperature by about three degrees. I want to achieve no more than a one degree temperature fluctuation within the tanks and so a decent refrigeration unit is becoming essential. However I intend to keep more than one tank in a lounge environment and so maybe the self build route might be a better option. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Cheers.

Also in Florida here. I had my tank at 63 through the winter and plan to raise to 65, maybe 66 in the summer. My concern is not having the chiller running constantly. We are from Ohio so we try to keep the house no higher than 75 even in the summer. The bits seem very happy anywhere in that range.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
