Not sure how this happened ! We have some caves in the tank but nothing sharp or pointy. Al the decor has been in there for a while then i noticed a gash on her mouth :( i feel awful. Should i leave it be or should i be treating it in some way ? Ive been lucky enough to never have experienced an injury in the 3 years we have owned axotls and i want Giles to be ok . She is eating fine and acting normal. CAM00468.jpg

You would be suprised how an axolotl could hurt itself. Axolotls are very good healers if they have good living environment. I would leave it and it should heal on its own and keep an eye out for fungus.

Ok thats what i thought im a nervous mom lol

mine had the same thing happen, I had to remove and smooth the edges of some rocks I had in the tank
mine would try to squeeze between it and the glass and would go head first, wound up with a small scratch on the chin like yours and another small one on its side :(
Ive moved the rock and chipped away and smoothed off the edges now
might want to check for anything with a sharp edge on it

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
